Zhuranka.  It is a village in Varva district of Chernihiv region,  on the bank of Udai River.

Georgiy Voronoi (in Ukrainian: Voronyi) was born here on April, 28, 1868, at that time it was a small town of Poltava gubernia.

Zhuravka was first mentioned in chronicles in 1618. In XX century a settlement of  the 12th-10th century BC was found here and it is know now in archaeology as Zhuravka settlement. At the Cossack times, from 1654 till 1782, a cossack squadron (in Ukrainian it was called: sotnia) belonging to the Pryluky regi-ment was settled here, so it had its military office, two wooden churches with Cossack schools. The family legend says that the Voronyis acquired their family name from a Cossack captain (in Ukrainian: esaul), a defender of the Voronivka Fortress which was to the north of Zhuravka.

A picturesque hill over the Udai River was bought by Georgy's grandfather Yakiv Voronyi. Yakiv began his activity as a chumak (Ukrainian ox--cart driver, salt merchant} and, earning sufficient amount of money, he bought this patch of land and settled here with his family.

G.Voronoi  often came to Zhuravka during all his life. He came here for summer vacations,   created here his research works. According to his last will, G.Voronoi is buried in Zhuravka.
