Acad. Prof. Dr. Yuriy Berezansky has died

The Institute of Mathematics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine with deep regret announces that on June 7, 2019, a prominent Ukrainian mathematician, one of the founders of modern functional analysis, the patriarch and founder of the Kyiv school of functional analysis, Yuriy Berezansky, the chief researcher at the Institute, died.

Yuriy Makarovich was born on May 8, 1925 in Ukrainian family in Kyiv; all his later life was connected with this city. In 1944 he entered the the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Kyiv State T. G. Shevchenko University, and after graduation (1948) entered the postgraduate study at the Department of Algebra and Functional Analysis of the Institute of Mathematics. His scientific supervisor was M. G. Krein. Here he held all the scientific positions up to the head of the department first of mathematical (1960-1986) and then functional (1986-2001) analysis, becoming a Corresponding member (1964), and later (1988) an Academician of NAS of Ukraine.

Yu. M. Berezansky was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology (1998) and Krylov (1980) and Bogolyubov (1997) Prizes of NAS of Ukraine.

Yu. M. Berezansky worked in the field of functional analysis, the theory of operators, the theory of differential equations and their applications. Among the students of Yu. M. Berezansky there are 10 doctors and 33 candidates of sciences. We convey our deepest condolences to relatives and colleagues of Yuriy Makarovich.

This is a heavy loss for the Institute and for all mathematicians of the world.
